We go above and beyond to make things simple and more intuitive. How? By putting ourselves in your shoes. We're constantly asking: How can we make things better? How can we help you? Whether we're watching hours of surgical procedures, creating hundreds of device prototypes or clarifying the reimbursement process, we do everything we can to make things easy-to-use and easy-to-understand. We want every device, every process and every experience with us to feel intuitive.
Making a difference.
The smarter solution.
Removing a patient's thyroid is no easy task. Surgeons need to create and seal incisions in some very tight spaces. We set out to make the procedure easier, faster and more intuitive, but we didn't do it by asking what they needed.
Instead, we used ethnographic research to discover what surgeons never dreamed they needed. We observed more than 20 procedures in operating rooms around the world and recorded every critical interaction with three high-def video cameras. Our immersive involvement helped us realize that surgeons were changing instruments more than 50 times in each thyroidectomy.
Our collaborative design process led to the HARMONIC FOCUS® Curved Shears – a single instrument that cuts, coagulates and dissects. Now, rather than switching devices, surgeons can focus on the surgery itself, which makes the procedure more efficient.
Surgeons love the compact, ergonomic design and immediately saw that we’d developed something that helps them and their patients. The industry did too – our research and design process during the development of HARMONIC FOCUS Curved Shears won a Gold 2009 International Design Excellence Award.
